The Subways arrives in Budapest with a new member – An interview with bassist Charlotte Cooper

The Subways have been returning to Hungary regularly for several years now, and this year they’ll be back in Budapest, a place they’ve never played before. We spoke to the band’s bassist Charlotte Cooper about the 27th March concert at the Akvárium, the new album and the change of members, and she also told us that Budapest is one of their favourite cities.

You have played several times in Hungary, at lots of places, like A38 Ship, Sziget
festival and now you are playing in the Akvárium. Are you excited before the
concerts, even if you know the audience?

We truly love playing in Hungary! I have so many amazing memories and it’s always such a
fun show. There’s something really special about Sziget Festival – I’d love to camp and stay
for the whole festival. I remember the year we played in the tent. It was totally full and had an electric atmosphere, such a vibe on stage. The main stage is one of the best in Europe too – it’s always an honour to play. Then there’s the A38 shows, always a crazy crowd. We’ve been lucky to have some days off in Budapest too, it’s such a beautiful city. We’re looking forward to checking out Akvárium this time – we cannot wait to come back to Budapest!

It is very rare and special when a non-Hungarian band speaks Hungarian and even sings. When did you start doing this, and why?

We have always tried to learn a few phrases or words in each country we visit. It’s fun for us and we also like to respect the local language. Billy just decided to take it one step further and sing a verse of Rock & Roll Queen in the language of each country we’re in. I have a lot of respect for him, as it can be really hard! People in the crowd now expect us to do it, so its great to see them singing along.

What happened to you in the last 8 years that resulted in you not releasing an
album?

Billy studied an English Literature degree at Cambridge University and we decided to take
some time out from touring around this. We had been on the road pretty much constantly
for years, which we love, but I think we all needed a break. We continued to work on the
new album throughout Billy’s time at university and still played a few shows here and there. I had 2 children in this time who are now 5 and 2. Then of course Covid happened, so we ended up with a longer break than planned, but now we are so happy to be back.

How can you describe the method of making this album as a new formation, with a new member?

The process of making this album was quite mixed. The first songs we recorded were in a
more traditional way at Billy’s studio. Then the pandemic hit and we couldn’t meet up to
record. We were really into the flow of making the album though, so wanted to find a way to continue. I set up a mini recording space in my attic bedroom, with a mic under a blanket. I sent bass, synth and vocal parts to Billy and he weaved them into the songs in his studio. I think this really shaped the album, as we all had so much time to really experiment and enjoy trying new ideas. Josh worked on his drum parts remotely from his home too and he finished the album before leaving the band. I was incredibly sad to see him go and I wasn’t sure what the future would look like with a different drummer. But then we found Camille, who is such an amazing drummer and really cool to be on tour with.

How do you feel your audience handled the change of members?

Everyone loves Camille! She fits in very naturally to our show. The audience love to see her
go wild behind the kit!

You have gone through in a very hard time as a band, despite the fact that covid
wasn’t easy for anyone. Did you had to take some changes in your life and habits in order to be able to continue touring?

Things are definitely different now and touring isn’t as simple as it used to be. But we love
being on stage and performing more than anything, so we will do all that we can to make it
work.

You will be performing in Budapest on the 27th March and two days later in Vienna. Do you fill these days off with sightseeing?

Budapest and Vienna are two of our favourite cities! We always try to experience some of
the place we’re in. I’m hoping for some nice Spring weather!

What are you going to do after the Europe tour?

We have an exciting summer of festivals coming up, which we can’t wait for. Hopefully a
Hungarian Festival might be added!

The Subways will perform at the Akvárium on March 27. More information on the concert’s Facebook event and the website of Live Nation!
